Baby Won't Sleep in Crib

We are so dedicated in choosing the right crib for our baby because he/she will sleep and spend most of his/her new born times in it. We have to make sure that the crib is comfortable and baby considers it as the safest place to sleep and revitalize. After getting the right crib, comes the time to impart the baby to sleep there. Yet, many people complain of the fact that their babies don't want to sleep in crib.

Baby Won't Sleep in Crib, Why?

There are several reasons that make it hard for your baby to fall asleep in crib:

  • When your baby is an infant, he/she might not like to sleep in the crib because it is distant from mommy, daddy or any others that give him/her comfort.
  • It might be too big for him/her as compared to mother's womb especially if he/she has not been wrapped up.
  • Maybe it is not that your baby won't sleep in the crib but he/she doesn't know how to fall asleep in the crib at the very beginning. This isn’t some instinctive human characteristic which can happen on its own. Just like potty training and learning of other day-to-day tasks, it requires training and practice.
  • If after a few months your baby still won't sleep in crib, do worry. He/she just has to make an effort to sleep well in the crib. Asking babies to sleep in crib is just like asking you to live in a hotel room. It takes time to get used to it.

If your baby won't sleep in crib, you can try the following ways to resolve this problem:

1. Make Crib an Acquaintance

For beginners, you have to help your baby get familiar with the crib and make he/she think that the crib is a heartening place. Give him/her a chance to play in it throughout the day with some of his/her preferred toys so he/she comes to see the crib as an acquainted, joyful place.

2. Give Some Great Company

Babies are dependent on their parents and they don't like crib because it imparts them with their beloved parents. In this case, you should help your baby fall in love with some other things, like a bunny toy. When put your baby to sleep in crib, let that toy accompany him/her so he/she will feel safe and comfortable to sleep on his/her own. Usually, options are easygoing, safe stuffed toys.

3. Follow Your Sleep Routine

Next you need to have a calm and foreseeable bedtime routine so that your baby will know when bedtime is approaching. It doesn’t matter what way you do things in (bath, bottle, song, story, etc.) as long as you do it the exact similar way every night. Predictable and habitual routine generates comfort and a sense of safety for your baby.

4. Teach Your Baby to Sleep in Crib

Now comes the difficult part – preparing the baby to sleep in crib. You can go in numerous diverse ways to help your baby sleep soundly in a crib depending on your ease level and the baby’s compliance.

  • Go over the customary routine so that he/she is tired but not entirely asleep and then abode him/her in the crib. If you’re fortunate, he/she will get the impression that it’s time to sleep and sleep on his/her own. But often the unpretentious act of getting into the crib is sufficient to get your baby into full-blown agitation and the baby won't sleep in crib.
  • If the above situation happens, you should stay in the room and carry on rubbing or patting the baby on the back until he/she goes to sleep. Although this way helps to soothe your baby, he/she will continue to depend on you to assist him/her to fall asleep.
  • The next step is to pull back from this kind of involvement gradually and step by step. You can first comfort your baby by patting on the back, and after a few days or weeks, you can start to slowly drift away and supporting him/her from a greater distance every night. Finally, he/she should be accustomed to having you say goodnight and exiting the room. This technique could take weeks or months to work properly.
  • Otherwise, you can moderately put your baby down, comfort him/her vocally, and then leave the room. You then continue to check in at fixed intermissions. Every time you come in, encourage him/her and let him/her know that it’s time to sleep. The benefit is that he/she will learn to fall asleep on his/her own but the drawback is that the learning progression may include lots of tears on part of the baby.

5. Make the Bedroom Comfortable

Once your baby is at last asleep in the crib, you must make sure that your baby is dry and relaxed. The room should be dim with black tinted shades. And try to minimize any sound or noise while baby is sleeping.
