How to Dream About What You Want

What if you want to know how to dream what you want? The blockbuster movie Inception features Dom Cobb and his sidekicks using drugs to induce certain dreams in people. Although the extent of the sedation and level of detail are far-fetched, the movie clearly captures the concept of dream control. Scientists have conducted dream experiments that have shown that some dream inducing techniques actually work. It is apparent that we can actually shape out dreams. We can plan to dream about a person, a subject of interest or even solving a problem.

How to Dream About What You Want

1. Look for Dream Signs

After you have been recording your dreams for a while, you will start noticing unusual signs such as a recurring image of a tree you have never seen in real life. It could even be an event such as the loss of your teeth or feeling dizzy such that you can’t move. Look out for these signs to know whether you are dreaming. Note down these signs in your journal.

2. Meditate Before Bed

Meditating before going to bed is one of the ways to learn how to dream about what you want. As you meditate, you should be totally self-aware and free from the distractions of daily life. As you lie in bed trying to catch some sleep, clear your mind and tell yourself that you’re falling asleep and you’re about to enter the dream state. Meditation can get rid of negative thoughts that might interfere with your sleep.

3. Visualize Your Dream

Visualize your dream before going to bed. Imagine how it will look, including details such as how it will look, smell and sound. Make sure to pay attention to all sensations including breathing and walking in this dreamscape. Convince yourself that you’re in an actual dream as you do so. Continue visualizing until you fall asleep.

4. Leave Dream Signs Around

A great way of getting lucid dreams is to leave a sign next to your bed of what you want to dream about. For example, if you want to dream about a certain person, have his or her picture with you as you go to bed. If you are an artist and need some inspiration for your next piece, you can leave a blank canvas next to your bed.

5. Sleep in Complete Darkness

In order to control your dreams, you need to sleep in complete darkness. This keeps the levels of melatonin in your body high and boosts dream recall. The best case scenario is that there should be no difference between the darkness you see when you open your eyes and when you close them. Avoid areas where there are dim light or windows that cast light. Try to sleep in the darkest possible environment.

6. Record Your Dream

The first step to learning how to dream about what you want is to take note of and remember your dreams. Before getting into bed at night, remind yourself that you want to fully recall your dreams when you wake up. Your subconscious will take over and pay attention to your dreams. When you wake up in the morning, ask yourself what you dreamt about before getting out of bed. Keep a journal by your bedside where you record your dreams on a daily basis.

7. Perform Reality Checks

Performing reality checks helps you differentiate between dreams and reality. You can perform reality checks when you are awake and while dreaming. Doing this while sleeping helps you become more aware of your dreams. Do the following reality checks:

  • Look in the mirror – If you can’t see yourself clearly, you are probably dreaming.
  • Read a clock – It will be blurry if you’re dreaming.
  • Switch the lights on and off – The light switches usually don’t work in a dream.
  • Use an electronic device – They mostly do not work in your dreams.
  • Try breathing while closing your mouth and covering your nose – If you succeed, you must be in your dreams.

8. Try MILD Technique

The Mnemonic Induction of Lucid Dreams (MILD) technique was created by Stephen LaBerge, the founder of Lucidity Institute. This technique has been touted as one of the best techniques for lucid dreaming and thus helps to understand how to dream about what you want. Here is how to go about it:

  • Tell yourself that you’ll remember your dreams as you retire to bed at night.
  • Make sure you focus on remembering and realizing your dreams when you are in a dream.
  • Try to imagine what you’ll be doing in the dream.
  • Repeat the above steps until you fall asleep.

Personal Experiences of Controlling Dreams

I hope this works for you as it did for me. I once visualized a girl I know dressed in a particular outfit. I thought about her for a while before I fell asleep. That night I dreamt about her dressed in the same outfit.

I’ll share my personal experience. I realized I was in a dream and I told myself that I could do whatever I wanted. I wanted to fly so I ran as fast as I could and I started flying. Controlling your dreams is actually possible. With proper concentration and thinking about it before going to bed, you will be able to do it. It might take some time though, but it’s a great way to learn how to dream about what you want.

While it is almost impossible to control the subconscious, you can actually dream about something you want if you keep it in mind for long enough. If you realize that you’re in a dream just like I did, you can change it. I have realized that I can actually control my dreams for a short time before I wake up.
