How Long to Wait for Pregnancy After NuvaRing

NuvaRing contains two different female hormones, progestin and estrogen, that work together to prevent pregnancy. This is used with a four-week cycle. It should remain in your vagina for 21 days or three weeks, followed by a one week break. Once placed in your vagina, a continual low dose of hormones will be emitted to prevent pregnancy. One nice difference is you won’t have to remember to take it every day. But what if you want a pregnancy after NuvaRing?

When Can You Get Pregnant After Discontinuing NuvaRing?

Since NuvaRing works similarly to birth control pills, the hormones can build in your system, causing you to experience temporary infertility. This can last for up to two or three months after discontinuing using NuvaRing. Usually, pregnancy happens after a few months but there are times that it can take longer. If you are still having trouble after a few months off the NuvaRing, you should speak to your doctor. You may have another health condition that is causing you trouble.

Other Mothers' Experience

For about two years I was on the NuvaRing. I stopped using it the first week in January and was pregnant by the first week in May. You have to remember that everyone is different and to be patient. The NuvaRing worked really well for us and I was so happy we conceived quickly.

If you have no other fertility problems, pregnancy after NuvaRing should not be a concern. Here are tips for preparing your body for pregnancy.

1. Take Folic Acid

Taking folic acid is crucial to making sure you have a healthy baby. You need at least 400 micrograms every day for a minimum of thirty days before pregnancy and through your first trimester. This cuts chances of neural-tube problems like spina bifida by as much as 50 percent. Folic acid is also useful in preventing other birth defects.

Folic acid supplements can be bought at the pharmacy. You need to make sure to check the label to make sure you have 400 mcg of folic acid. If you aren’t sure what you should be taking, make sure to speak with your doctor.

2. Have a Balanced Diet

Though you’re not yet eating for two, you should start making healthy choices right away. Aim for 2-2 ½ cups of fruits and veggies every day. Make sure to get grains and foods that are rich in calcium such as milk, yogurt and orange juice. Enjoy protein from a variety of sources such as poultry, meat, seeds, nuts and beans. A balanced diet is essential in preparing pregnancy after NuvaRing usage.

3. Monitor Caffeine Intake

There is no consensus on how much caffeine is safe when pregnant. It is generally recommended to limit caffeine to about one cup of coffee or 200 milligrams a day. This is a good goal when trying to conceive.

4. Give Up Smoking, Binge Drinking and Drugs

If you do any of these things, now is the time to stop. There are even studies suggesting secondhand smoke can reduce chances of pregnancy.

Moderate drinking, or a drink a day for women, is considered OK when trying to conceive. You should avoid excessive amounts when trying to conceive. When pregnant, doctors recommend not drinking because the effects on developing fetuses are unknown. Remember that drugs stay in your system even when the effects have gone away. It may be difficult to stop and if so, you should contact a healthcare professional.

5. Make a Healthy Weight Your Goals

The healthier your weight is, the better chance you’ll have of pregnancy after NuvaRing. Having high or low BMI (Body Mass Index) can make conceiving harder. A healthy weight can help your pregnancy start out right. Higher BMIs are linked to complications in pregnancy and delivery. It is also true that those with a low BMI may have a hard time gaining enough weight and can have babies with low birthweight.

6. Stick to an Exercise Routine

If you create and follow an exercise plan now, you will have a fit and healthy body for your baby. This should include 30 or more minutes of moderate exercise on most days of the week. You can add yoga and stretching for a well-rounded program. It is encouraged to continue through your pregnancy, unless your doctor says otherwise.

7. Avoid Infections

You want to stay away from infections if you are trying to get pregnant. Skip dairy foods that are unpasteurized; avoid cold deli meats and raw or undercooked poultry and fish. These can have listeriosis. You should also skip unpasteurized juice because it can carry salmonella and E. coli. Wash your hands frequently and make sure your fridge is between 35-40 degrees Fahrenheit. Also keep up on your vaccines to avoid issues here.
