How to Be More Social

Being more social doesn't happen overnight. Here are some simple tips that you can try to use in your everyday life for improving.

1.  Use Body Language

Whenever you find yourself at a social gathering such as a party, use your body language to indicate that you are approachable. Be sure to always make eye contact with others and be sure to wave or nod at them. Look directly in front of you instead of looking at the floor or at your feet. This is one effective way about how to be more sociable.

Try to stop frowning, crossing your arms, or standing in a corner. These are various gestures that push people away and make others feel as though you wish to be left alone. Always keep your cell phone shut off. If you are busy with your phone, people think you are too busy to have any fun with them.

2.  Ask Questions and Show Interests

Ask others about themselves. If you want to try and be more sociable, you need to start conversing with the people around you and then you need to let them know that you are interested in what they have said. Ask them how they are feeling, how their day is going, and what things are coming up in their future. You shouldn't try to be nosy or pry into other people's personal business. Instead, let them know you care about them by asking them to tell a few things about themselves. Wait for their turn before having your own turn.

3.  Smile

You will turn out to be someone that people want to associate themselves if you are excited about life and generally happy. If you don't always feel happy, make yourself smile so that it appears you are happy anyway. The smile will allow you to feel better right away and people will choose to be around you because you seem so nice and they are willing to know more about you.

4.  Be Open-Minded

You may not be very sociable because you believe that no one has anything or any life similar to your own. You may be prejudiced and feel like others are too cool to talk to, too stupid or much too shy to be associated with you. What you really need is to be as open-minded as possible and allow people to open up to you in just the way they are. This will give the other person the chance to be open with you; you may find that you have a great deal more in common than you would otherwise think.

5.  Be Positive

People will be more attracted to you if you are optimistic and a positive person. While you learn how to be more social, make a concerted effort to be a positive person. Do this not only in social circumstances but be positive when no one is around you. Remember that life circumstances are not really as bad as you first think they are.

6.  Exercise

In order to truly be engaged with others or to hold a conversation with another person, you need to have a mind that is active. You can have an active mind and will stay alert and in the best of health if you regularly exercise. Exercise is not just for better physical well-being; it is great for your emotional and mental health. In addition, you can meet some excellent people at the gym, who you already have something in common with and it can be a great way to start a conversation with them.

7.  Be Nice

Go out of your way to actively help someone who needs help. When you do something good for others, you will feel better about engaging with them at a later date. Do things like shopping for someone who is elderly, making a cup of coffee or tea for someone at work, or just doing any good deed you can think of to help others. Your actions will be louder than your words when it comes to building up a relationship with another person.

8.  Practice It

You need to practice if you want to learn how to be more social. This requires that you conceive of socialization as a skill just like any other. You need to get out of what makes you comfortable and take the effort to be interactive with others on a regular basis. You can start this process by engaging in conversation with people you see on a regular basis, such as cashiers, bank tellers, and baristas. Spend as much time with friends as you can. If you have a solitary hobby, try inviting someone to share that hobby with them. Don't turn down social invitations. Don't make an excuse, such as telling them you are too tired to socialize. Try to practice it as much as possible.

9.  Offer Invitations

If you are waiting for others to invite you to different places or call you to invite you somewhere, you may be wasting time. It takes mutual effort to carry on a relationship, so you should show people you value them by inviting them to go somewhere instead of waiting. Try to stay in touch with others, even if you don't live nearby. Simply pick up the phone, send them a text, or send off an email just to ask them how they are doing.

10.  Improve Your Self-Image

What's true is that everyone feels insecure or shy at one time or another. If you feel that shyness is getting in the way of socializing, it is likely that you are telling yourself that you can't do many things, for example, you can be social like others. You need to eliminate these thoughts and stop comparing your condition with those who have been social people for a long period of time and have an easier time making friends. You have special and great qualities that someone will like and appreciate.
