10 Tips for How to Get Up in the Morning

Many people dream of getting up early in the morning, jumping out of bed and being full of vigor. However, the reality is different. Most of us can't make ourselves crawl out of bed. Whenever that dreadful alarm goes off, we just can't help but cover our ears with a pillow in hope it will stop soon. But haven't you had enough of being late for school or for work? Aren't you tired of excuses and feeling sleepy all day long instead of feeling refreshed? If the answer is yes, follow these steps and you will finally be able to get up easily.

How to Get Up in the Morning

1. Establish Healthy Sleeping Habits

If you want to get some quality sleep, keeping a regular sleep schedule is a way to go. Of course, your schedule may need some adjustment from time to time. So adjust it properly, plan ahead and start going to bed 15 minutes earlier every night until reaching the desired bedtime routine.

2. Be Careful of What You Eat/Drink

It is recommended you do not go to bed with either a full or an empty stomach, as this will cause some discomfort that could get in the way of your sleep. Furthermore, remember not to drink too much unless you want your bladder to fill up and make you wake up several time during the night to go to the bathroom. Also, avoid alcohol and caffeine; they are known to keep people awake.

3. Turn All the Lights Off

And when I say all of the lights, I also mean that tiny blue/green/red dot light emitted from your laptop or a mobile phone, which, believe it or not, scientists claim is even more disturbing to sleep than the regular ambient lighting. Therefore, after you decide it's slumber time, remember to turn off your electronics.

4. Set Some Goals

Of course, going from a night owl to a morning bird isn't easy, but once you set up a goal that motivates you enough to encourage yourself out of bed, such as morning jog, it becomes much easier.

5. Set Your Alarm

How to get up in the morning? Probably the most obvious answer to the question is to set your alarm. To make sure you don't sleep through it, it's a good idea to set it to go off a couple of times, or even set a few alarms. However, if this alone doesn't seem to help you, here is what you can do in addition:

  • Place your alarm somewhere that is hard to reach without getting up. This way you will have to leave the comfort of your bed to turn it off.
  • Change the sound of your alarm, as you might be used to sleeping through the sound of the old one.
  • If your phone allows you to write notes that appear when your alarm goes off, try writing a motivational one such as ''Get up you sleepy head, it's a beautiful day!'' It will make you smile, thus making it easier to roll out of bed.

6. Take Small Steps That Would Make It Easier for You to Wake Up

There are a few things you can take care of before going to bed, which can save you some precious time in the morning and make getting up much more pleasant. Here are a few examples of what you can do:

  • Decide what you are going to wear the night before, and put it on a chair.
  • If you cannot leave the house without your morning cup of tea, fill the kettle with water and put a tea bag into a cup. If you are not addicted to tea, but rather coffee, just set up your coffee making machine.
  • Put a glass of water on the nightstand so you don't have to run to the kitchen right after you wake up to get some. Also, if you get thirsty in the middle of a night, you can easily take a sip without getting up.

7. Start Your Healthy Morning Ritual

If you are still wondering how to get up in the morning, there are a few steps that will help you accomplish it:

  • Turn off the alarm.
  • Fill your lungs with air by inhaling deeply.
  • Do some in-bed stretching to wake up your extremities.
  • Get on your feet.
  • Smile. Because even if you have no reason for it, it will make you feel good.
  • Go to your balcony and take a couple of deep breaths of fresh air.

8. Go to the Bathroom

An important part of the morning routine is going to the bathroom. The bright lights will force you to wake up fully, and brushing your teeth will make you feel as new. You should also:

  • Wash your face with some cold water.
  • Avoid warm baths as they will only make you sleepier. Instead, take a shower but make sure that the water is more cold than hot.
  • Bring your phone to the bathroom and put your favorite songs on.

9. Get Some Exercise

How to get up in the morning? Well, you can start by following some of the previously mentioned tips, as well as exercising. Exercise is an amazing way to start your day because it wakes up your limbs, boosts your energy and makes you feel invincible. Even if there is no time for a full session, there are a couple of small workouts you can always do.

  • There is no way you will feel sleepy after taking a morning jog.
  • Enroll in a morning yoga class or practice some yoga poses and meditation at the comfort of your home.
  • You don't have to drive to your work all the time. If it's nearby, take a walk instead.

10. Try Melatonin

If you still have trouble falling asleep and waking up early, you should try taking a supplement of the sleep-regulating hormone, melatonin, which is naturally produced by human body. If you opt for consuming it, remember to stick with a dose of 0.5 to 1 milligrams and take it 5-6 hours before going to bed. Do this for a few days to notice results.

However, if you suffer from any sleep disorder, autoimmune disease, and diabetes, or if you are taking blood thinners, blood pressure medication and sedatives, or are simply on birth control, do not take melatonin without consulting with your doctor beforehand.
